San Zaccaria

The Church of San Zaccaria was built at the beginning of the 9th century to keep the sacred remains of Saint Zaccaria, father of San Giovanni Battista, donated to Venice by the Byzantine Emperor Leone V l’Armeno.

The Doges Angelo and Giustiniano Partecipazio then added a monastery of Benedictine nuns.

In 1105 a devastating fire destroyed the church and its monastery.

In the following years both buildings were rebuilt and then enlarged. But it was only in 1458 that Antonio Gambello was entrusted with the task of realizing a new, more imposing construction that could incorporate the previous church.

However, the project was completed by Mauro Codussi, after the late architect, in 1490.
